Transcription Jobs at Home

There are a lot of transcription jobs hitting the internet.  A lot of times people need transcripts of their video content in order to form some text content for web spiders to crawl.  Transcripts are also useful in their own right as downloads and info products.  Of course, transcription has always had a variety of other uses, as well.  Some of these companies also caption materials for the hearing impaired.

At the minimum, you need a very high typing speed, headphones, and a special transcription pedal to work with any of these jobs. You can find them on bid sites but you can also find them elsewhere.   You can find a very large listing of work-from-home transcription companies right here:  www.workfromhomeguide.net/transcription_jobs.html.

I recommend that you work with those companies but keep your eye on the bid sites.  Most of those companies have a very, "Don't call us, we'll call you" policy.  They're saturated--they seem to have all of the workforce that they need.  You should register with them to see if they'll throw some work your way, but unless you build up a long track record with them you're not going to make a living through these companies.  Use them as a source of secondary work and focus your transcription efforts elsewhere.

I want to caution you about spending money on Medical Transcription training programs.  The big promise is that medical transcription will "save you"--that it's so in demand that you can just visit a few doctor's offices and boom, you're working at home.  The truth is most doctor's offices work with standard transcription companies.  Medical transcription from home happens after you do a stint at one of these companies, build a relationship with these offices, and then quietly saying, "Hey, I'm striking out on my own, here's my card."

In fact, I want to spend just a moment to talk to you about a common scam that happens in the work from home world.  That scam says that you can have zero skills, no knowledge, and no ability and still strike it rich from home.  Listen, I'm going to debunk this right now.  The amount of money you make is directly proportional to your knowledge, your skills, and your experience.  Your ability to research opportunities and market yourself to them runs exactly parallel to those things, and is equally important.  You can't just answer an ad that tells you that you can "type" online or "learn a system in twenty seconds" and make money.  Successful people in any work from home opportunities that you can think of really work on what they're doing.

So if you can't hardly type right now, and you've never heard of a transcription pedal, and you've never done any transcription, this is not the opportunity for you.  If you can type, and you have heard of a transcription pedal, and you do have some experience to point to this might be a great opportunity for you!  It's certainly out there.  Before spending money on any programs, however, make sure that you research how people really make money from home doing it.  Check out these companies, find out what they require, and look on bid sites for these jobs to see what these employers are looking for.  Then you'll be armed when it comes time to look for work!
