Site Build It! Diaries, Day Six, Part 1
Today I got as far as building my home page. That took up a lot more video and reading time than it sounds like! I spent about an hour learning what I'd done wrong on every previous home page, enough that I got a little self-conscious about trying again. However, I was very satisfied by the time I got done using the tools.
The idea behind "sophisticated tools" is kind of what ended up inspiring me for today's post. In a book I'm writing for a client they talk about tools, and how tools are just a collection of random junk unless you sit down to build a house. I think what's great about Site Build It! is the way that SBI helps me build the house. It gave me a foundation, and a frame. Now I'm putting up walls and beginning to hang things on them. My Tier 1 page is up.
I did have trouble running the "analyze" button so I'm going to have to take my work with faith, trust, and a little bit of pixie dust so to speak--but I liked how it looked on the preview and I liked what I wrote. 29 pages later I will be ready to go. It won't be too hard I don't think--I finalized the 5 "tier 2" pages that I will be using today. We were supposed to do that back at Day 4, but back then I really only had a vague idea of what I was doing. Something about today's process really "clicked" for me, allowing me to understand how I'm going to make this site unfold.
Most of the time you get tools without much of a manual--what's unique and special here is the abundance of information I have to play with. I also like that SBI repeats the information over and over again. It probably wouldn't have clicked for me if they hadn't gone through that Tier structure one more time.
It's really easy to start putting your site together. I don't feel intimidated about that at all. I in fact started having a great deal of fun with it! It's as easy as say--using Wordpress--which is pretty easy for anyone.
Has anyone started using SBI yet? What have your experiences been like? Do you feel like it has been a good tool? Do you feel like you could have done as much using the normal website tools?
