Real Work from Home Jobs: Live Ops
Some of our posts here on Home of Home Business are dedicated to helping real people find real work from home opportunities. Sometimes those are businesses or business opportunities. Sometimes those are business ideas, such as gathering gigs on Elance.com or Odesk.com. Sometimes it's about helping you find someone to work for. Today I'd like to tell you about Live Ops. This is an in-house call center that actually allows you to make a living wage. Ever wonder who the guys answering the phone are when you order stuff on TV? Turns out it is the Live Ops people. The company boasts high retention and a decent pay schedule. What you need to do:
- Fill out an application
- Call and read the audition script in your best voice. If you've never done phone work before it's vital that you speak clearly. You're aiming to sound a bit like a Radio DJ. You don't want to speak so slowly that you sound stupid but you don't want to speak so quickly that you can't be understood, either.
- You will have to undergo a credit check, and there are certain criteria that can disqualify you--but they're reasonable enough
- You do have to live in the United States to take advantage of this opportunity
If you're hired, you will need:
- A phone
- A noise cancelling microphone (I recommend one of the Plantronics phones which combines both and is very reliable. Plantronics is the brand most professional call centers use and the phones are reasonably priced)
- A high speed internet connection and a computer
You will be an independent contractor, which means:
- You're also free to work for anyone else. This is not a bad opportunity if you need something to do while you are trying to launch an entrepreneurial opportunity
- You have to do your own taxes
- You're still in business for yourself--the product you are providing in this case is sales/customer service.
- You can work as many hours as you want, which means you get paid for, but nobody has to pay you overtime.
You need the temperament to handle many different personality types with a sense of humor and professionalism. Phone work is not for the faint of heart. You also need the discipline to set a schedule or conform to a schedule each day that you go to work. This is not something to do with small children running around--but if you have school aged children you can make a decent living, for example, while the children are at school. You won't get rich--but you won't have to commute, go into an office, or deal with office politics. You won't even have to deal with the presence of a boss on a day to day basis. It has the added benefit of not being a scam, which is always important, too.
