Internet Marketing Tools for Listbuilding
You may have heard, if you're
trying to make money on the internet, that the "money is in the list." The
first time I heard this statement I had no idea what the person saying
it was talking about. If you're in this boat, never fear and read on,
because now I can walk you through it step by step.
1. When people refer to "the list," they are referring
to an auto-responder e-mail list. You're probably already a member of
several. If you've ever "signed up for a free newsletter" or gotten a
"free download" after entering your name and e-mail address you're part of the
list unless you later told the people sending the e-mail to unsubscribe you.
You've been receiving advertisements by your own permission ever since.
Is this bad? Not necessarily, as a well crafted list e-mail actually
creates value for the reader.
2. People who do this are using
something like Aweber
or getresponse.com. These services will pre-generate forms for you to
place on websites (usually landing pages, which exist for no other purpose but
to convince people to sign up for your list). They will also manage the
e-mail addresses, manage following as many of the laws as can be automated, help
make your e-mails pretty with HTML templates and allow you to schedule when each
e-mail goes out. I do personally use Aweber*,
since my Online Marketing Coach Rob
Goyette recommended me to use them. But he is not alone. Internet
Marketing legend Jonathan Mizel (called the "master of targeted opt-in e-mail)
calls AWeber:
"A systematic process that sucks the maximum amount of cash out of each prospect." -- Jonathan Mizel, Autoresponse Seminar
Another advantage - a very important one - is the high delivery rate a high quality service like Aweber has. This means that your emails to our list are delivered and do not end up in the spam filters. For this Aweber and for sure getresponse are always in direct contact with the Internet Service Providers (ISP) to make sure that your emails are not locked by them.
They help you, teach you and if necessary stop you from spamming. I appreciated this help very much in my early days (still do, but less often). So I got to know Aweber's customer service as being extremely helpful. I am sure the same is true for getresponse.com. Use their advice to keep you from legal and marketing troubles!
3. Once people sign up to the list you have the chance to get them to buy and rebuy. Repeat business is always easier and more important than any new business you might drum up. If you do your job right people will look forward to your emails and find them useful. Your roduct recommendations will be meaningful to them. You might be selling your own products. You might be selling someone else's as an affiliate. You might be a direct sales person and you might be talking about new products. In between talking about why your readership should buy new things you'll be telling them things they want to know about.
It really is this simple--at
least, in theory. In practice, you have to:
You generally can't cheat either--you can sometimes "rent" a list but you can never buy one, and "renting" the list leaves a short term impression. You can sometimes get more members with a "link swap" -- in which your buddy leads people to your landing page on his list and you lead people to his on yours--and you can sometimes get still more by giving a digital product away at a Joint Venture Giveaway Event (you can often sign up for these and find them just by typing the words into Google).
But if you can't put together quality list subject matter, you're sunk, so choose well. Mere ads won't do. Fluff newsletters won't do. Short e-courses sometimes will do. Great content--always. In order to create your best list you should sign up for other lists in your genre or list. This will give you a chance to study what they're doing.
You'll quickly figure out who puts together things worth reading and who is filling your inbox up with crap. Start duplicating the best efforts, and you'll have yourself a marketing tool (for whatever you're doing) in no time. Again, the type of business you are in does not matter when it comes to this model, so long as your readers find something of worth when they open your mail.
*Since I am experienced and happy with their service and (Home) Business is about building, I make money referring new customers to them. This has the advantage of being able to offer my readers special bonuses.
