Do You Have a System?
Anyone who understands business will tell you the importance of systems. In fact, one of the biggest mistakes new entrepreneurs make is their failure to create and maintain a system. Most people who start home based businesses get caught up in working in the business instead of on the business. When you work in the business you are performing the day to day functions of the business. When you work on the business you are deciding how those functions will happen. You are determining what works, and what doesn't, and adopting a strategy as a result. If you're a one man operation of course, you have to do both. Your business will fail if you don't work in it enough and your business will fail if you don't work on it enough. Working In The Business:
1. Producing the business
product (where most entrepreneurs spend 90% of their time, unless they are in
the business of selling other people's products).
2. Selling the
business product.
3. Marketing the business
product.
4. Handling customer service issues that
arise.
5. Billing, collections, accounts receivables, and tax
preparation.
6. If you have any employees, payroll and other
human resource functions.
Working ON the Business:
1. Determining how many units
have to be sold each day to make the business a success.
2.
Developing a sales method that works.
3. Finding a way to make
the business product faster.
4. Analyzing your marketing traffic
to see whether ad "A" or ad "B" worked better.
5. Deciding
whether you will take cash, checks, or credit cards
6. Writing
down a checklist of daily activities for each employee.
When deciding on a home based business opportunity, look at the system long before you look at a product. A product can be good, but it's nothing without the supporting system. Having a product without a system is like having a bunch of walls and windows without having a foundation and a framework. You need a proven system which will help make you a success. Look for coaches with systems too. Many home based opportunities offer full coaching as one of their selling points. That's wonderful, but there are two types of coaches.
1. Cheerleaders, who tell you
to work on your "why" and your motivations a lot.
2. Mentors,
who show you what works and why it works.
You want a mentor. If
you've never done so before, check out http://www.e-myth.com/. This
website will teach you a lot about systems based business. Remember: If you fail
to plan, you plan to fail. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again
and expecting different results. Take some time to work on your business
today.
